Kelly (45sec) was second. Kivell (.scratch) also competed, but was fully a length away when Urn placed men touched, He seems to have rather a icnji time .with the' handicapping. However, the Contest is still com paratively in its early stages, a ■ when the shorter , distances are reached the handicapping should be some what closer. . The time was 4m«m 19sec. In the second heat Masters (4*ec) had no difficulty in beating Jebb (bo SG Jebb stuck manfully to his task, and showed that he ,can still be pushed further out in the handicaps. Whittington had a severe attack oi that tired feeling early m the race,. and did not finish. . No doubt he will ring on points when the shorter distances come up fo Th9°tinie was drain 22,sec, Masters winning easing up. . The final produced a fair race. Kelly worked up into second place, and turned for home with the back marker, but could not get closer to Masters at the finish than five lengths Bennett came third, and Jebb last, considerable distaices behind. The time was 4mm 13 d-osec. Mr W. P. Kirkwood had an easy job as judge, Mr. E. B. Stohr was in liia usual form as starter and timekeeper, and Mr. A. Happily the longer distances have been gone through; but .swimming the swimming of the •final on the same day somewhat counts against the. younger swimmers. . , .... Bennett was a case in point last ' night. He swam a nice race in his heat in 4min 19sec. but in the final could do rib better than about 4min 35 !. -No doubt' he, swam himself, out in ' tile fiM heat, which habit, of course, ’ he will losM rik‘he does more racing; 1 K A ’ further.
