Mr Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment yesterday morning in the case in which Samuel Williamson was ohar- , god with theft, and also with receiving stolon goods. After reviewing the evidence, his Worship said that ’ the accused acted very foolishly in lying to the police, even though he did so on behalf of his brother, and for the sake of saving his brother. There was nothing in the evidence to convict him of theft. As to the charge of receiving stolon goods, his Worship felt justified in giving him the benefit i of the doubt as to whether there was criminal intent. There could be no doubt that accused had taken a very ’ foolish style in regard to the mattor, and no doubt the proceedings would probably teach him a lesson. He was discharged. In reply to a question as to whether I he wished a warrant issued for the arrest of the brother, the Chief De--1 tective said that he would consult the 1 nspcctor. Timaru, February 25. Chas. Dunn, an A.B. of H.M.S. I Pioneer, was yesterday fined £2 or in default three days’ imprisonment for drunkenness and obscene language in the streets. He was also convicted on a charge of assaulting tho police. This was the outcome of a moleo, in which two police officers, Senior-Ser-geant Dart and Constable Fulton, were badly mauled, especially the former, by a number of drunken raan-of-warsmen, assisted by some town hoodlums. 'The police were unable to identify the others. The Magistrate said that he had made the penalty light, as the man would be dealt with further aboard ship. The Magistrate said j that the men were allowed a certain ( amount of liberty ashore, but must conform to the civil laws. Auckland, February 25. j j At the Supreme Court William Col-j , lins, aged 35, was sentenced to ten years’ and five years’ imprisonment, , cumulative, on five charges of indecent assaults on young boys.
