SWIMMING NOTES.

(By Amphi Bios.) Tho first distance for the champion cup (150yds) was decided at the baths last night. There was not a great many spectators, though the racing was fairly interesting. Of those handicapped only six faced tho starter and incidentally the handicapper, who was present in order to judge the pace of the Champion Cuppers. Those entered who for reasons of their , own have, therefore, reason to ho sorry, as it is certain that in the next race tho starts will be on a finer basis, and those who did not swim . ' yesterday will be very liable to become pocketed. The first heat was won by E H, Kivoll (scratch), E. Jebb (30sec) .get- ~ [ 'ting ■ 'second place. Bennett (30sec) .. i also started. ‘ ' K ~' : ,; ;Hb committed ah error of judgment; in abandoning the race ,at ;a,hundre<l ■; yards, as ho was holding Jebb well and had still a fair lead from Kivell. However, a few_ more races should bnprofio his judgment ; and a cham- ; pion cupper’s list of articles “wanted on the voyage” probably reads as near the following as possible:— Judgment Judgment iiij Science - '' '' , Cr - Judgment •, . . Wind / Judgment ' Practice J udgment Judgment Kivell won easing up, Jebb, who swam a game race, demonstrating that he can be put further out without danger. Tho time twas 2min 47sec.

Masters, liberally treated at 9sec, had no difficulty in getting first place in the second heat, though the second man (Kelly, 30sec) gave him good pace, especially over the later stages. Whittington (2osec) also started but got tired and gave up. Better luck next time! The time was 2min 29sec. Masters demonstrated his spoonfed treatment in the final, winning without trouble in 2min 26 2-ssec, though again Kelly was lying handy at the part of the race juxtaposed to the decision. Kelly and Jobb ambled over the first length together, taking 21sec over the journey. ;A little later the struggle finally settled down as between Masters and Kelly. Masters won by two lengths going easy. Jobb came in a fair third. Kivcll was an invited guest at every stage of the race. Better luck next time! The points for the Cup therefore now stand:— Masters 3 Kelly 2 .Jobb 1 A regrettable feature is that the major points were won by old-estab-iished 'swimmers—they should have been won by newer and younger men. These younger and newer men must see to the matter for the. next race. it is not far away.

It is good that Jehh got one point. Ho is fond of the water and not afraid of the handicappcr. The following are the handicaps of Stratford men operating at Hawcra this evening:— 50yds: Kivoll 3scc, Masters 4sec, Kelly ipsec; 100yds: Kivell ssec, Masters Csec, Kelly 12sec; 150yds: Kivell 9sec, Masters lOsec, Kelly lOscc. A full staff of officers looked after the racing yesterday. Messrs W. P. Kirkwood and D. J. Malone had, unfortunately, not a very hard task in the posts of judges. Afi* E. B. Stohr got, the men away iwell up to schedule time. Mr J. F. Watson capably clocked the time of arrival at the finishing post. Mr F l . M. Marlow was far from useless in the important positions of call steward and marksman.
