NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. ~
SOUTHLAND WINS THE SHIELD

Invercargill, February 21. The weather was more than disappointing for tne New Zealand cliainp.onships athletic meeting, being cold and boisterous, with frequent drenching showers. It was a day of surprises, and the crowning surprise was Southland eventually winning, the shield with 34 points, Canterbury 26, Auckland 29, Wellington 18, and Otago 14. The following are the chain- 1 pionship results:— 100yds Flat Championship (present champion R. Opie, Canteruury).—R. E. higgles tone (.Otago), 1; R. Op-s (Canterbury), 2; R. L. Christie (.Southland), 3. At the 50yds mark Opie and Eggleston© were abreast, but the latter forged ahead and won on the last stride by three or four inches. Half-mile Flat, winner to hold the Hooper Challenge Cup for one year (present champion W. G. Hajding, Wellington).—A. \V. Dormer (Auckland), 1; C. S. Thomas (Canterbury), 2. ’ Also started: T. R. Robertson (Southland), Bryne (Wellington), A. MacDonald (Southland), T. Seddoii (Southland). Won by five yards, with eight yards between second and third. Time, 2min 5 4-osec. Polo Vault (present champion, L. McKay, Wellington).—G. Giller (Southland), 9ft 9m, 1; G. Bate tone (Canterbury), 9ft oin, 2. L. McKay, the champion, was far from well, as liis ankle was troubling him, and lie seemed to feel the cold very keenly, and was obviously stiff. He could not negotiate the ■ 9ft bin jump, which Giller cleared beautifully. Three Mile Walk (present champion, H. E. Kerr, Wellington).—D. Cushman (Wellington), 1; M. E. Kerr (Wellington), 2. These were the only starters. They were abreast until the' last lap, when Cushman went out and beat the champion by a good eight yards. Time, 22min 18sec. 120yds Hurdles (present champion, G. P. Kecldell, Southland). —G. P. Keddell (Southland), 1; F. Cook (Canterbury), 2. Keddell did not appear to extend himself, but won with comparative ease by IJycls. Time, 17 see.
Putting IGlb 'Wcigjiv W, De Their, Canterburv). — A. S. Reid (Southland), 36ft bni i 1; Mcßovi’ (Southland), 36ft 2in, J2; A. Bissett (Wellington), 33ft Din, 3. One Mile Flat, winner to hold Bannister Challenge Cup for one year (present champion, G. N. Hill, Auckland). —G. X. Hill, (Auckland), 1; C. Pugii (Wellington), 2; T. Seddou (Southland), 3. Also started: M. Dickson (.Canterbury). From the start Hill’s stride .led him to the front, and he never lost his place. Pugh ran an excellent race, but finished 26yds behind the champion. Dickson dropped out at the second hip. Time,, 4min. 47 4-ssec. 220yds Flat (present champion, 11. Opie, Canterbury).—R. Opie/ (Canterbury), 1; R. E. Egglestons (Otago') 2; M. P. Poole (Wellington), 3. Also started: R. L. Christie (Southland) and H. G. Saunders (Southland). Opie, led from the start, and won a fine’race by three yards, with Poole a yard away third.' Time, 24 4-ssoci ' Running Broad Jump (present champion, G. P. Keddell, Southland). —G. P. Keddell (Southland), 21ft 9} in, 1; F. M. Reid (Otago), 19ft 8-Jin, ■ 2; R. F. Mitchell (Otago), 19ft 3|in, 3. Also competed: S. Batstone (Canterbury) and C. E. Robertson'(Southland). Competitors seemed to have some difficulty in picking ■up the board at the start, and Keddell, until he made his winning jump, did not appear to be anybody in particular. In his third effort, however, lie measured his distance better, and made a jump which was amply good enough for the company he was in. Throwing IGlb Hammer (holder, A. Bissett, Wellington).—M. Kean (Southland), 121 ft 9in', 1;- J. MeHolme (Canterbury), 121 ft 2in, 2. Also competed: A." Bissett (Wellington) and M. Crowe (Southland). Running High Jump (holder, R. F. Mitchell, Otago).—R. F. Mitchell (Otago), sft lip, 1; E. V. Robinson (Canterbury) and C. Robertson (Southlands tie, 2. Also competed: L. McKay (Wellington), G. Giller (Southland), and C. M. Reid (Otago). Robinson and Robertson tied for second .place, but Ju, the jump off the Canterbury man cleared the bar at sft lin.
One Mile Walk (holder, H. E. Kerr, Wellington).—H. E. Kerr (Wellington), 1; I). Cashman (Wellington), 2; A. 11. Buchanan (Otago), .3. Also started: F. King (Southland). The Otago man went to the front at the start, but was quickly overhauled by the champion. King'dropped out before the first lap was completed. Although Cashman challenged often, Kerr went out in the last lap and won by 30yds, with Buchanan a long way behind. Time, Gmin 42 2-ssec. Hop, Step and Jump (holder, L. McKay, Wellington).—F. Hazlett (Southland), 42ft Gin, 1; P. Harvey (Canterbury), 12ft, 2; L. McKay (Wellington), 41 ft Gin, 3. Also competed: F. Coolc (Canterbury), C. Robertson (Southland), P. Chamberlain (Southland), W. Thomson (Southland) and M. P. Poole (Wellington). The champion, McKay, who was suffering from an injured leg, only attempted one jump. Hazlett won on his last jump.
Throe Mile Flat (holder, G. N. Hill, Auckland}.—G. N. Hill (Auckland), 1; M. Dickson (Canterbury), 2; •J- Boatsou (Otago), 3. Also started: G. G. Nottman (Otago), C. W. Fry (Otago), T. R. Robertson (Soutliland), and C. 11. Pugh (Wellington). The three id need men and Fry were the only ones to finish. Hill always kept the field well in hand, and sprinting away in the last Jap, won by 40yds, wit!) Boatsou ten yards away. Time, .lomin 52 l-ssoc.
410yds Flat (holder, R. Opie, Canterbury).—Dormer (Auckland), ] ; J. Wilton (Wellington), 2; J. A. MacDonaW (Southland), 3. AJso started: C. S. Thomas (Canterbury). From a good start, Wilton showed the way to the straight, where Dormer went to the front and won by If yds. Time 53 4-ssec.
44:0yds Hurdles (holder, G. P. Redded, Southland).—F. Cook (Canterbury). 1- G. P. Keddoll (Southland), 2. Also started: R. F. Mitchell (Otago), P. Harvey (Canterbury), C. Robertson (Southland). Against a head wind, Keddoll could make little progress. He was certainly faster than Cook over the'jumps, and was almost on the leader at the last hurdle, but Cook raced away in the straight and won by four yards. Time 65 l-ssec.
