Edward Norland for assault on Patrick Keene causing actual bodily harm was sentenced to one year; Annie McConnell convicted at last sessions on a charge of wounding Thos. Madgan with intent and causing actual bodily harm with a revolver, two years’ hard labour; John Wall, alias Carson, theft from a dwelling at Taumarunui, four years’ hard labour and declared an habitual criminal. Wellington, February 19. Decrees nisi were granted in the following divorce cases hoard to-day: Joseph Edwin Ffrost v. Emilia Ffrost; Minnie McMaugh v. Lancelot Meredith McMaugh. Hamilton, February 19. Alec Smith, land agent, was fined £5 for travellings on the railways without a ticket. There were three more prosecutions against youths for failing to attend Territorial parades. Each was fined £2 and costs. [Auckland, February 19. In the Supreme Court in the case Etliel Ellen Watson v. W. M. Fyfe, dentist, of Onchunga, claim £2OO damages for unskilful treatment in extracting ‘teeth, the jury found a verdict for plaintiff for £SO damages. Costs were awarded on the lowest scale. Wanganui, February 19. The Supreme Court opened to-day. Addressing the Grand Jury, the Chief Justice congratulated the district on the fact that there wore only four •criminal cases, two ct which, wore not •serious. He Imped this showed that the present method of dealing with crime was having a good effect. He trusted it was an indication of the time when crime would be greatly diminished, though ho could not hope to abolish it altogether. True bills were returned in the eases Rex v. Stewart, Rex v. Zeigler, and Rex v. Vinson. In the case of Zeigler, charged with stabbing a man at Mangaweka on February 3rd, a verdict of guilty was returned and accused was remanded for sentence till Wednesday.
