Christchurch, February 16

Two heats in the half-mile amateur swimming championship were swum today, resulting:—Eirst heat: M. E. Champion 1 '(time 12min 22 2-ssoc), R. Healy (Thorndon) 2 .(time 13min 28 2-sscc), F. J. Kernott (Ponsonby) 3 (time 14min 18 3-ssec). The only competitors. Second heat: C. Wilson (Waitemata) 1 .(time 12min 31 l-osoc), F. Seymour (Hawke’s Bay) 2 (time 12min 48 4-ssec), C. H. H. Rich (Opinya) 3 (time 13min 38 l-ssec). E. J. Dawson (Dunedin), and E. J. McQuillan (Waitemata) also competed, hut dropped out in the early .stages of the race. Protests were entered by two swiinmers, who wanted to compete but who alleged that no official announcement was made of the alteration in the time at which the race was to be swum. [There is a likelihood of the race having to he re-swum" 1 .

Roberts, in evidence, said ,an agreement was arranged whereby the receipts were pooled and divided, Roberts paying the first-class travelling expenses of Gray, senior and junior, which would afterwards lie deducted from, the Grays’ share of receipts. When Gray reached London, however, ho' arranged with Rileys that he was to receive thirty pounds weekly. Rileys’ gross receipts had been £-1655, Gray receiving £7BO. In consequence of the repudiation of the agreement, Roberts had lost £SOO at Dublin, £350 at Manchester, and £I2OO on two other matches. The receipts at the Higgle match, which Gray repudiated on ten minutes’ notice, were £113) and would have been at least £500: if Gray had played. Rileys’ net profit was only £3OO. Roberts . misfit a ted the date of the expiry of his contract with ( the Benzoline hall, .manufacturers, which made it impossible for Roberts to play with Crystallite balls.

Gray, in evidence, said he was sure it was arranged in Melbourne that he and Roberts were to play together always but the question of profits was not mentioned.
