Macquarie Island has established wireless communication with Sydney. Signals at botli ends were clear.
Michele Blunno, head of the viticuffural branch of the Agricultural Department, was charged with attempting to kill Archibald AVindeyer, a well-known squatter and other persons. Evidence showed that Blunno was infatuated with Windoyer’s sister. When he was informed that the latter was engaged, he wrote saying there would be no marriage, but funerals. The jury found Blunno not guilty as he was suffering from temporary mental derangement at the time the letter was written.

The name-board of the schoonci Paris was washed on the beach near Newcastle settling doubts as to the identity of the derelict. It is supposed that she capsized on Friday night during a heavy gale. She left Forster on the third for Sydney and was not afterwards signalled. The derelict at present constitutes a menace to navigation. Arrangements arc being made to destroy it. There was a serious attempt to wreck a train at Culcain. /A number or fishplates were placed on the line at the approach to a bridge. The engine was derailed before it was pulled up. ,
An arrest has been effected. Melbourne, February 16. Joseph Pfeffer, guilty of the murde of Florence Whitley on Decembe 12tli, has been sentenced to death.
