His companions then assaulted him, hurling sticks at hini, and fracturing his skull. The reason for the murder was Kelly’s objecting to the boys kicking wet balls about the yard. lAt the Labour Party’s demonstration at Albert Hall on behalf of adult suffrage, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, M.P., stated that the time had come when tho basis of democracy must be broadened. „ ,He would certainly turn, out the Government on the suffrage question. It is officially stated that the Sugar Conference has renewed the convention for five years, allowing Russia to export an extra hundred and fifty thousand tons in the present season and a further hundred thousand spread over the following years. St. Petersburg, February 14. The Maleka trial has begun at Warsaw in open Court. In deference to British representations owing to the absence of a witness it will- be continued till May. Rome, February 14. Forty-five schoolboys were walking on the San Remo promenade, which was weakened by rain, when it collapsed. Thirty wore engulphed. Five are dead and eight are in a critical condition. The accident is attributed > to the boys marching in step. New York, Februay 14. The Groat Northern train, the “Oriental Limited,” was wrecked at Devon, North Dakota. Several were killed and "many injured. Physicians rushed to tho scene of the accident by special train. The death roll is umiscertamahle as yet, but it is believed to bo eight. Capetown, February 14. The Financial Commissioners’ report states that owing to tho trend towards smaller self-governing areas, he
is disinclined to recommend the enlargement of provincial powers, and recommends in the meantime that the Government grant half the provincial expenditure, the provinces defraying the remainder from direct taxation.
