REMARKABLE MOBILISATION OF
POLICE AT BRISBANE
THREE THOUSAND MEN READY
Brisbane, February 13
The Governor issued a proclamation foroiciding unlawful assemblies. A copy was served by the police on the strike leaders. This was followed by a remarkable mobilisation of the police near the Trades Hall. The Bush Mounted Constabulary appeared riding in fours, with their right sleeves rolled up and holding batons aloft. They were joined by a band of mounted spe-'ia l constables, carrying r.»l“.> an , fixed bayonets. Ai-togeT-r turn, ti.i.san.l *-•; im,lulled.
The strikers abandoned their usual mass meeting.
Mr Barnes, in reply, agreed to take them back, but reserved the right to take such action as he deemed just in regard to the question of forfeiture of privileges.
The city is quiet. To-day’s large array of police was the result of special instructions from the Premier. A deputation of Government Printing Office strikers waited on the Treasurer, and made application for reinstatement, and announced their determination to dissociate themselves from the unions.
THE COMPULSORY CONFERENCE
Melbourne, February 13. The compulsory strike conference sat for two hours in private. The official statement is that no agreement was reached on the materials available. The president referred the dispute .to the Arbitration Court on Friday.
FISHERMEN CEASE WORK
Auckland, February 13
I ne position concerning the dispute Between the Auckland fishermen and tiie wholesale buyers remains unchanged. .Most of the fishing boats were idle yesterday, and except for one nr two private boats no fish came into port.
The men announce that they will hang hack just so long as the dealers refuse to pay them their price. A limited supply is available for'public purchase at the wharves.
In the meantime the wholesale buyers hold a mooting at which the whole question was discussed. The outcome of the deliberations has not boon disclosed, beyond a statement that it was resolved to stand firm on the decision not to pay more .than 2s per bundle.
WELLINGTON MEAT' WORKERS
Wellington, February 13
There is no change to report in connection with the strike of labourers at Petone and Ngalmurauga meat works. The strikers and their families enjoyed themselves at a picnic today. Mr Rally, Conciliation Commissioner. is expected to return From Napier on Thursday night. It is understood ho will endeavour to get the meat workers and employers to meet him in order to try and adjust their differences.
