Gaudin, drowned in the Matanra River below the Falls at Matanra on tne 3rd instant, was recovered on .Saturday by the lad’s father four miles below the township. , , Feilding, February 12'. Mr D. H. A fatal accident occurred at Green Island bush at midnight on Saturday, Ezekiel Campbell, 41, single, being pinned under an express and succumbing to a factored skull. It is stated that Campbell was drunk, having.been refused liquor at tile Waterloo Hotel. He had purchased three dozen bottles of beer arid had hired Wm. McEwen to drive him home. Millar has informed a “Post” representative that the railways revenue for the ten months of the year exceeds the estimate by £7OOO. The estimate for the year was £3,525,000. An Indian was drowned and a Fijian was killed by a house falling. A hulk-keeper and a native tried to got ashore and were carried to sea. The latest news states that Taviuni had a bad hurricane with severe damage on the south-east of the island. Gisborne, February 12. The North Island Brass Band Association’s fifteenth contest opened this aftern'oon in glorious weather. The bands paraded the, town and proceeded to the park where an official reception was held, there being a large .attendance, the massed bands playing “Conqueror” under the conductoriship . of Lieutenant Herd. This evening the E flat cornet and euphonium solos will be taken. Wanganui, February 12. Michael John .Howler, single, 28, was found dead in bed in the Castlecliff Hotel this morning. An inquest is being held this afternoon. It is supposed that death was due to ,an epileptic fit. A young man named McCarthy,

aged 23, was drowned at Ranana, up the Wanganui River, yesterday, at midday. Deceased with nine other young Europeans and two Maoris were in a canoe which was swamped and capsized in a rapid. The other occupants wore rescued by Maoris in another canoe. McCarthy was the best swimmer of the party and it is .supposed that lie was seized with cramp. The body lias not been recovered. Deceased came from Masterton. Obituary: Captain Nicholson Woods, aged GO. Deceased was formerly for many years, connected with the Union S.S. Company. For the post six years he was employed by the Canterbury S.S. Company. He suffered for some time past . from heart trouble.
