hollowing yesterday’s demonstration and rumours of an intended big procession to-day proclamations were issued at midnight prohibiting mass meetings and processions from today to tiie 27tb. It is pointed, out that there is reason to believe that it is the intention of a large number of people to renew disturbances. Citizens are counselled to resist unlawful proceedings. The employers announce their determination not to recede a single step from the position taken up. There is much delay in business circles owing to mails aboard steamers not calling being sent back and brought overland from Sydney. The master carriers have resolved to . fill the places of strikers with free labour. The Commissioner of Police replied to a request to hold a procession that any attempt would be dispersed with force. Normal conditions have practically resumed in the northern districts. 1 The Australian Workers’ Union mandate to return to work is being generally obeyed. The strike leaders continue to deny that the strike is breaking down. They claim that the loyal unionists arc more solid than ever. Trade is being diverted to Sydney and to complete the consternation of Brisbane merchants the Railway Department is curtailing the services on the central railways with a view to husbanding the coal supplies. The miners at Blair Athol and Bluff ceased work, the object being to prevent the augmentation of the Brisbane coal plyHAT MILLS STRIKE. (Received 1.3, 10.30. a.m.) Melbourne, February 13. A strike in the Denton Hat Mills over the employment of non-unionists resulted in the closing of five more mills. A thousand are idle.
