(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) (Received 10, 11.0 a.m.) London, February 9. The trial of Captain Grosse on a charge of espionage lias commenced at Manchester. The estate of the late Sir George Lewis has been proved at £237,615. He left bequests to many charities. The “Westminster Gazette” interviewed Sir John Kirk, the secretary or tiie Ragged Schools Union, who has just returned from a visit to Australasia. He said the public conscience of Australia and New Zealand was keen on questions which concerned the welfare of children. The reason was twofold—the people value their children for their own sakes, and additional population was required. (Received 10, 10.10 a.m.) London, February 9. The trial at Winchester of Captain Grosse on a charge of espionage has concluded, Grosse being convicted and sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. (Received 10, 10.10 a.m.) . Mexico, February 9. Gonzales, Minister for the Interior, while visiting Chihuahua in order to pacify rebels, was cut off’through a bridge being burnt and trains being unable to return. Gonzales had a narrow escape from capture, hut the conductor of the hand-car on which lie travelled hid him when the car was ivertaken -by rebels. A detachment ’.rriving by a relief train finally rescued him.
