Christchurch, February 8

Robert William Joseph Hiffen, a young man, on remand was charged with attempting to commit suicide at Riccarton on January 30th by strangling himself with his tie. He had previously pleaded guilty. He was committed and discharged, having been seven days in gaol already. The Magistrate remarked that the trouble was caused by drink, and ho hoped the case would he a warning to accused.

He ran into the stove and pulled a saucepan of boiling water over him. A verdict of death by misadventure was returned.
