Christchurch, February 8
Robert William Joseph Hiffen, a young man, on remand was charged with attempting to commit suicide at Riccarton on January 30th by strangling himself with his tie. He had previously pleaded guilty. He was committed and discharged, having been seven days in gaol already. The Magistrate remarked that the trouble was caused by drink, and ho hoped the case would he a warning to accused.
Gisborne, February 8. The Puha boardinghouse of eight rooms was destroyed, by lire this morning. The insurance is not obtainable. Timaru, February 8.
A wot clay further checked harvest ,'work, and so much rain has fallen the ground in many parts is too soft to hoar the reaper. Therefore, several days will ho lost even if rain ceases. Auckland, February 8. News has been received at bluntly to the effect that the body of a man was found in the river at Foster’s Island. The identity of the person is at present unknown. The police are investigating. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Robert I‘Jlis Cuthbortson, aged 20 months, who died from scalds on Wednesday night. The evidence showed that the child was playing with a paper bag. He put the bag on his head and it slipped over his eyes, the child being practically blindfolded. He ran into the stove and pulled a saucepan of boiling water over him. A verdict of death by misadventure was returned.
