UNIVERSITY SENATE.

At the final sitting of the University Senate the Finance Committee’s recommendation that the suggestion in the Chancellor's report, that trust funds be invested with the Public Trustee, should be referred to the investment committee for inquiry and with power to act, was agreed to. The finance committee reported that the statute scholarships provide for the payment to junior university scholars by the Sen,ate of £2O. per annum, in addition to the amount of tuition fees, and the Senate is therefore liable for..the -payment of the tuition fees. Junior university scholars are at ptes'fint • allowed to enter the professional, schools, in which case their tuition fees may amount to a mucji larger sum than for those taking the aits, or science course. ( , The committee' ‘recommended that the statute “scholarships be amended hy at the end thereof,' “the uumharjof classes' taken 1 by him shall be'limited at the of the professorial board of such college.” This would make the conditions the same as for senior national scholars. — r riio 'rccoifinibfid'atio'h' was adopted. "

With reference to the law committee’s recommendation that two scholarships be established, one for Roman law and the other for contracts and torts, it was resolved that one scholarship be offered annually as at jires'ent, but that it bo awarded for Rpman law and contracts and torts in 1912. Subjects for future years will be decided at next annual meeting of the Seriate. The report of the finance committee stated that the balance-sheet of tb.o general account showed a surplus of receipts over expenditure of £470 17s lid. On the receipt side appeared the sum of £75 4s, being a refund from ordinary scholarships account, and in the expehditure appeared £SOO transferred to ordinary account, as recommended by the finance committee last year. If these items wore considered the surplus of receipts over expenditure would amount to £895 13s lid. The corrected surplus of the preceding year amounted to £402 11s Bd. There was an increase in receipts over the preceding year of £928 5s 4d, and an increase of expenditure of £748 15s Id. The increase was very largely due to the largo amount of £1337 14s for examination fees. The large increase in matriculation fees (£BB4 7s) was probably duo to the raising of the standard of matriculation examination. The balance of the ordinary scholarship account at the end of the year was £25,439 18s 7d, being an increase of £.1149 14s 7d.

Witli regard to'the various special scholarship accounts, the estimate for the year ending 31st December, 1912, placed general receipts at £10,050 and expenditure at £10,030, giving a surplus ,of £2O. The estimated receipts for the sclxolarship account were stated at £2750 and expenditure at £2530, an estimated surplus of £220.

On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided to increase the salary of the assistant registrar to £3OO per year. To make examiners’ fees more uniform it was decided to make the payments of examiners in New Zealand for law, commerce, and other November subjects the same as for junior scholarships. A letter was received from the Education Department enclosing a dispatch from the Admiralty regarding the conditions of admission of medical • officers to the 'navy. The letter was received and ordered to be printed in the calendar. The Senate meets in the morning to pass the statutes, which were read a first time yesterday, when the report was received from the statutes committee.

A special meeting of the Senate to transact special business will be held in Wellington a fortnight after the reports of the Home examiners are received.

The next general meeting of the Senate will be held in Auckland on January 18th, 1913.
