SUNDRY SPORTS.
ELTHAM SPOUTS, .CLUB
Proceedings at the Elthapn Spprts arfd Pastimes Club’s hall |l^st ( evening were somewhat more interesting than usual, says'Thursda.Y’Sj Followers of the “nolile art’’ jyerc tuned up with 1 the announcbmpnip of the appearance in the ring of Maxwell, the amateur middleweight champion of the Dominion. It was stated by Professor Stagppole (whose, repartition, as a referee, by the way, is Domipjonwide, and has already made' himself most popular with members of the local club), that last night’s appearance of Maxwell was his last as an amateur, he being to meet Tim Tracey at Wanganui ( on /Ist March for a big purse, “go” with Wing Kee, promising local middle-weight, only r lasted a round, but it was sufficient, to give the spectators a taste of ibho champion’s qualities. His feet have only a nodding acquaintance with the sawdust, while his hands deal out punishment, especially at close quarters, in a manner that his opponent probably cares little to recall. It was a merry go, indeed, and his meeting with Tracey should lie worth a pilgrimage to witness. Maxwell has had fourteen fights and with one exception the verdict has been in his favour every time. Three of his doughtiest opponents could not last one round with him. The professor prophesies that ho will heat Tracey.
Professor Stagpoole announced at the close of the evening that programmes for a monster tournament to be hold in the Town Hall, Eltiham, would be issued within a week’s time, and ho expressed the hope to see a large attendance who would hhve the opportunity of seeing an officially and well-conducted entertainment.
The officials for tlio evening wore Professor Stagpoolo (referee), Mr C. Wad 6 (manager), and Mr 1A„ A. Stewart (timekeeper), and they deserve tllianks for providing an absolutely fair,- clean, and enjoyable evening’s sport.
