At the Supreme Court tenday, before Sir Robert Stout, Lewis Bowater was acquitted on a charge of a breach of the Bankruptcy Act by having made a false statement of his affairs to obtain credit of £596 15s 6d from Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Timaru, February 7. At the Supreme Court W. N. Clausen <»was acquitted on a charge of stealing a bicycje in ’October, 1910. No evidence was offered on a charge of theft of clothes at the same time. Accused swore he bought the bicycle and swag together on the road.
P. J. Cowan was acquitted on a charge of attempting an illegal operation. The judge directed the jury that it was unsafe to convict on a woman’s evidence lacking corroboration.
Three discharges from bankruptcj were granted, and two divorce decrees were granted, namely, Ritson v. Ritson (Ashburton), drunkenness, failure to support, and cruelty, and Hardcastle v. Hardciastlo, desertion. Civil cases will be commenced to-mor-row. One is a suit against the Land Board, plaintiff claiming that at a ballot for Mackenzie runs one of them ought to have keen allotted to him, because the one who got it was not present to pay his deposit. CALVES KEPT WITHOUT FOOD. Christchurch, February 7. About three weeks ago three young calves were sent to Lyttelton on the Saturday afternoon, consigned to the steamer John Anderson, for - Port Levy. As the steamer did not go that afternoon the railway authorities sidetracked the waggon containing the calves, which remained without food or drink (except for a bucket of water provided on Sunday night by the Harbour Board watchman) until Monday Morning. At Lyttelton Police Court this morning Samuel SparTtes was charged that, being the person having charge of the three calves consigned to Lyttelton by rail at Christchurch, ho did omit to supply them with proper and sufficient fopd. The Magistrate held that there had been negligence, and lined defendant £1 and costs.
