BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
SPEECH BY am. LLOYD-GEORGE IN ITS DEFENCE. REDUCTION OF (ARMAMENTS. London, February 4. Mr Lloyd-Georgc, in a speech at tho City Liberal Club, denied a 'split in tho Cabinet. He refuted Mr Bonar Law’s accusations regarding overcrowding in the civil service and in lofence of strictness declared that the lowness of consols was due to the South African war and the Irish Land Vet widening the area of trustee investments for which tho Unionist Government was responsible. The country vas better prepared for an emergency than ever before. They would never be able to arrest the growth of armaments until international envies, joalmisies and fears were removed. He believed the time was favourable for a better understanding between Germany, France, Russia, and Britain. Such a result was obtainable by candour, frankness, and boldness. The money saved from the construction of armaments could better be employed in improving the people’s condition.
