STILL UNDECIDED.

BOROUGH COUNCIL AND THE HOAD ROLLER.

DECISION DEFERRED,

A special meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night to further consider the proposal to purchase a road roller. There were present, the Mayor (Mr J. Masters, in the chair), Councillors N. J. King, G. Sangster, Jos. Boon, T. Paget, S. Ward, T. Lawson, R. McK. Morison, J. McAllister, and J. D. Healy. The Mayor reported that the special committee had visited Mangatoki and Manaia, and had seen two machines working. As a result, they recommended the Council to purchase a McLaren machine with a scarifier. The machine could he easily converted from a road roller into a traction engine. One advantage of this would ho that the machine could he hired out to contractors, and would thus earn money.

Councillor Paget moved that the matter of selecting a road roller he referred hack to the committee for more detailed information as to the cost of a convertible traction engine and a road roller, and that opportunity he given to all firms to supply the information and give quotations. Councillor Healy, in speaking to the motion, said they wanted to make some revenue out of the machine, which otherwise would he somewhat in the nature of a “white elephant.” Or. King said that the Council was in a far better position now than it was when Councillor Paget had moved that £9OO he borrowed straight away for the purchase of a roller. Councillors Paget and Healy interjected that the finances were in a worse state.

Councillor King replied that they were some £7OO or £BOO to the good. Cr. Paget: How much? I want.all this.

Cr. King continued that the report of the committee had put a different phase on the subject. They should get particulars of convertible machines.

He agreed that this was the best course to pursue, and the motion was ithen carried.
