THEFT OF HATS..
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 26. A labourer named knud Edinbreth Bergmann wa's arrested to-day on- a charge of stealing 68 men’s felt hats, the property of Macky, Logan, Caldwell and Co. The hats were recently found to be missing from a- case of hats received by the firm named. A lhat worn by Bergmann was observed by Detective Powell to resemble those in the pillaged case, arid after further inquiries the arrest followed. The police afterwards took’ possession of six more hats,., which were found in Bergmann’s house. «». ’ THE PORT OF GISBORNE. Gisborne, Friday, January The representations made by the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce to the shipping companies to have Gisborne rated as a main port for direct inward shipments has been considered by the London Boards of the respective shipping companies, who decline the request.
COMPLAINTS BY FARMERS. Feilding, January 26. Farmers are complaining strongly of the treatment they are getting at the hands of the railway authorities in regard to the supply of trucks for sheep and cattle. The trouble is that local officials are unable to give definite information. The Farmers’ Union is to approach the Minister of Railways on the matter. LABOUR PARTY FORMED. Palmerston, January 26. At a well-attended public meeting to-night an Independent Labour Party was formed in Palmerston. Messrs Veitch and Robertson, M.’sP.J addressed the gathering.
