A resolution was carried-at the-an-nual convention of the Grand Federal Council of J the Protestant Defence Association including, a protest against tie., Ne Temsre decree and an expression of ■sympathy with the Unionists in Ireland in their endeavour to maintain civil and religious liberty by resisting Homo Rule.

Much .grass and-hay crops were destroyed. SYDNEY’S~SHIPPING. (Received 25, ( J. 5 a.m.) Sydney, January ’25. An official report dealing with shipping shows that the tonnage of vessels entering New South Wales ports in 1860 was under half a million. In 1910 the total was nearly six and a half million tons. Since Federation ' trade had expanded enormously, the tonnage of inward shipping increasing by fifty-seven and outward by sixtyeight per cent. - . CADETS TO TOUR. Sydney, January 24. Sydney, January 24. re-grading of the New South Whies civil service is completed, and involves increases totalling £150,000 per annum, school teachers benefiting to the extent of £IOO,OOO. SUBMARINE SURVEY. Sydney, January 24. The greatest depth obtained by the Iris during the survey for the new cable was 2700 fathoms. Soundings were taken at intervals for twenty miles in a zig-zag direction. The bottom in temperate water proved normal, and samples of the sea bottom showed that it consisted mostly of globigerina ooze.
