A large Italian State railway contract has been placed with Yorkshire contractors, indicating the Welsh markets are swept. COMMONWEALTH TRADE. London, January 22. “The Times’ ” annual review says that the Commonwealth fared well during the past year, but less woll than in the two previous years. While admitting that the Government’s Ran expenditure was justifiable, some ox the expenditure ought not to be incurred. The increase in the burden of taxation was severe, and there had been no call for the proposed banking legislation. Discussing New Zealand, the review says the Dominion continues to be fairly prosperous, though, owing to increased indebtedness and industrial unrest, the position is less favourable than in 1910. AMERICAN SUICIDE RATE. 1, I ' New York, January 22. The American death rate by suicide in 1911 was 16 per 100,000 of population. California led the States in the number of suicides, San Francisco heading the list. GERMANY AND THE VATICAN. Berlin, January 22.
