BOROUGH ROAD ROLLER.

QUESTION OF PURCHASE FURTHER POSTPONED. SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING. a'lUOli -ji'.'i '■! i n i- )Si ■ A special,' Reeling of the Borough Council was held last night to go into the question ,of purchasing a steam road roller. I '’' The Mayor (Mr J. Masters) whs unavoidably detained elsewhere, and ; in his absence Cr. King was voted to the chair. The other councillors present were: Crs. T. Paget, T. Lawson, R. McK. Morison, J. D. Healy, S. Ward, G. Sangster, and J. McAllister.

The Chairman moved that the Council go into committee to consider the situation, which had arisen over a recent “scene” which occurred in the Council, Councillor. Paget refusing to withdraw certain remarks, and, in consequence, being requested to leave the Chamber.

This was done, but on resuming, the Council had nothing to report.

A report of the Works and Finance Conimittees was brought down, stating that the committees had been into the question of finance and find that on 31st March next, the end of the financial year, the overdraft bo approximately £l-100, or £llOO less than at a similar ■ period last year. They recommended that a road roller should he purchased at once.

Letters were received from Messrs Newton King and the N.Z. L.M. and Co., with regard to machines for which they were agents, and a representative ofi a big English firm waited on the Council. After some discussion it was decided, on the motion of Dr. Paget, to refer the report back to the Works and Finance Committees, with the view of giving local firms an opportunity to tender and that personal enquiries be made from various counties having road rollers in use. The opinion was expressed that this was the only fair thing the Council could do, seeing that the local agents of road rollers appeared to have been unaware of the intentions of the Council to purchase a roller and in consequence their machines had not been properly represented or their merits investigated.
