A BRUTAL OUTRAGE.
•V POSTMISTRESS ASSAULTED BY A BURGLAR.
SERIOUS INJURIES. (Per Press Association I Kimbolton, January 20. A dastardly outrage was committed t the Post Office at Kiwitoa, 12 niles from Eeilding, at an early hour esterday morning. About 1 o’clock Mrs Kernahan, postmistress, who was deeping with her daughter, 14 years ■ld, was awakened by a man who had ipened the window. The man donanded the keys of the safe. "When Mrs Kernahan refused she screamed nul the little girl ran across the road md awoke a neighbour. In the neantime the man dragged Mrs Kermhan through the window and brutdly assaulted her with a lieavy piece >f wood or an iron bar. By the time lelp arrived the man had completely lisappearod. The woman was found 'ying unconscious and bleeding. vSho vas taken to Eeilding. Medical cxuuination showed that an arm was broken apparently in shielding her bead. The head was much bruised. The victim is now in a private hospital, seriously though not dangerously ill. Sergeant llowben and Detective Quirke quickly proceeded to Kiwitea but though the whole' district was scoured there was no trace of the man. One or two duos were followed u]) but without result . The aflair is a shock to the district, as the postmistress, who is a widow, is very popular.
