Italian officers boarded the French steamer Carthage, bound for Tunis, and ordered the captain to immediately destroy Duval’s aeroplane. The captain refused, and the Italians then demanded the Tripolitan mail-bag. This was also refused, and thereupon the Carthage was seized. The French mail steamer Manouba, bound for Tunis, was taken to Cagliari. The steamer Schleswig, which was accompanying the Manoiiba, was merely searched and then released.

EXTENSIVE WAR FRAUDS

Rome, January 19

War frauds have been discovered in Naples. Contractors forced cattle to cat salt. Consequently they consumed an enormous amount of water just before being placed on weighing machines. The army buying department was thus defrauded of several hundreds cf thousands of francs. SUICIDE IN A CHURCH. (Received 20, 9.10 a.m.) London, Janaury 19. Hudener, formerly employed at the Austrian Embassy, and suspected of a jewel robbery at the Embassy, was found in the Congregational Church in Tolmer Srpiare at midnight. The police attempted arrest him, whereupon he committed suicide with a revolver.
