The shortage ox teachers is becoming serious in .North Canteroury. In i report presented to-day by the appointment committee of the Education hoard, it was stated tiiat in view of she shortage in the supply of teachers evidenced Oy the fact that existing vacancies would absorb all students who had left the training college, it nad been agreed to again impress upon the .Department the necessity of appointing an additional number of probationers. With regard to the .Department’s statement that any deficiency might he met by falling back upon Class !> students, who are now practically shut out of training colleges for lack of vacancies, it had been agreed to point out that no applicant under division H had been refused admission in Christchurch on such grounds. The secretary reported that owing mainly to the substituting of assistant mistresses in several schools and to the increase of attendance, there were approximately 2o vacancies for assistant mistresses to be advertised. In order to n inim’so the inconvenience that would Me occasioned by advertising so large a number at one time, it was agreed to call immediately for applications for hall the number, the remaining vacancies to bo advertised later.
