PERTH ENGINEERS’ STRIKE. (Received 17, 10.25 a.m.) Perth, January 17. All overtures towards a settlement of the engineers’ strike have so far been unavailing. CARPENTERS GO OUT. (Received 17, 10.25 a.m.) Brisbane, January 17. There is a strike of carpenters at Townsville, over the question of bonus hours. Hitherto it lias been the practice to pay for forty-eight hours, though the men ordinarily work fortyseven. DISSATISFIED LETTER-CARRIERS (Received 17, 10.25 a.m.) Melbourne, January 17. The Postmaster-General, replying to a deputation of letter-carriers, airing grievances, said the Government considered that it had done a fair thing by postal employees. He did not think there was any reasonable chance oi making further concessions this year., except by order of the Arbitration Court. In view of the increases granted, he thought it time to call a halt. BRITISH COTTON TROUBLE. (Received 17, 1T.40 a.m.) Loiqlon, January 16. Subject to the operatives’ approval the Askwith conciliation conference agreed on resumption of work on the basis of a half year’s truce, and adjourned till Friday to consider details.
