VOTES FOR WOMEN.
NATIONAL CALAMITY OF THE FIRST MAGNITUDE. A REFERENDUM DESIRABLE. (Received 17, 8.5 a.m.) London, January 16. Messrs. McKenna, Pease, Hobhonse, Seeley, Lambert, St. Leger, Granard, and Herschell also appear on the platform to protest against woman suffrage on February 28th. Mr. F. Smith, writing to “T)ie Times,” states that votes for women would be a national calamity of the first magnitude. A referendum was desirable to help a section of the liberals who were prepared to face the difficulty. The Ministry was not inconsistent in advocating the referendum, as it was not a party measure.
