COUNTY FINANCE.
NEW SYSTEM ADOPTED. . At the County Council meeting ch Saturday afternoon the discussion on finance was concluded. Cr Walter, in reply, said lie felt quite justified in bringing the matter forward. Cr Thomson had very unkindly twitted him in the matter and said that there was no need for a special meeting. Cr Thomson; Oh no, that’s unfair! Cr Walter went,on to say that the engineer and the foreman could easily do what he wanted, which was an estimate of the cost of keeping every road in all the ridings in fair order. When they had the estimates, they must stick to it. Ho moved: “That estimates he furnished at the early part of each financial year by the engineer, who in preparing same shall consult with the riding members, such 'stiinate to be laid before the Council for consideration and adoption, and that in levying rates the Council is to take this as a basis and strike a sufficient rate to cover these estimitos and leave a sufficient margin for contingencies.” Speaking to the motion, Cr Christoffcl said there was a motion to that effect already on the books. The South Hiding still kept to it, but it was the only one. He had expected to hear proposed a new system of finance. He did not like the system by which deputations were enabled to get their paltry wants attended to by using the money that had collected for the payment of loans. The motion was carried unanimously and a further motion was passed to avail the Council of the information thus gained.
