Republicans from Outeiro destroyed the much-revered image of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the neighbouring village of Assentis. Two thousand Catholics marched into Outeiro, and, in a fierce right, five persons were killed and forty seriously wounded. Cavalry and infantry have been reestablished by order of Parliament. The press is favourable to the. Government’s Bill legalising gambling, opening luxurious casinos in the chief towns, and granting ,licenses to the highest bidders. A British syndicate with a capital of £1,000,000 lias offered to build casinos in Lisbon and Cintra similar to that at Monte Carlo.
