THE FROZEN LAMB TRADE.
There are some notes of interest in the “Pastoralist’s Review” concerning the frozen lamb trade in the Argentine. It is stated that there has recently been a. significant increase in the export of lambs from South America to Great Britain, and it is very evident that further efforts are being made to develop this branch of the trade. Shipments during July, August, and September of tho current year reached the total of 280,000 carcases. For a similar quarter of last year the output was 63,000 carcases, and in 1909, 73,260 carcases: These figures show that there has been quite a . remarkable increase. Ever since the beginning of the year the lamb trade has been expanding, and to date over 800,000 carcases have been shipped. Fears are expressed in London that if the Argentine continues to increase her output of lamb, and there is no diminution in supplies from Australia and New Zealand, the Home market may be oversupplied and prices slump as they did early this year. The Argentine lambs are said to compare favourably with the Australian and sell at about the same rate. The question is being asked, “Is 'Argentine soiling too many lambs to the freezing companies?” At the present day it is said to be donbtful if their are sixty millions of sheep in Argentina, as a large number perished in the drought of the last two years. One authority says that tho decrease is largely due to the slaughter of the lambs for export, be apparently includes in the term “lambs” sheep under three years of age.
