Wellington, January 10-' Mr George Ross, New Zealand re-' pueseiftabive., of , the Equitable Life Assurance Society, has received the following cablegram from the Sydney office of the society:—“Head office cable that the Equitable building is destroyed by lire, hut the securities arp intact, and business is only temporarily inconvenienced. The charge against John Wilson was dismissed on the ground of insufficient evidence. Brimmer was committed for trial on a charge of receiving goods, knowing the same to be stolen. Frank Campbell was also committed for trial on a similar charge. Bail was allowed in each case, self in £2OO, and one or more sureties up to £2OO. , REPAIRS TO THE MARAROA. Christchurch, January 10. The work of repairing the thrustblock of the Union Co.’s Mararoa, which was fractured on Monday evening, was completed by Messrs Anderson, Ltd., this morning, and the block was removed to the vessel for fitting. Subsequently, Mr A. Cameron, inspector of machinery, inspected the work, and expressed himself highly pleased with the manner in which it had been done. The Mararoa will take up her usual running to-niglit for Wellington, leaving Lyttelton on the arrival of the 5.25 p.m. train from Christchurch. THE DEADLY AIR-GUN. Dunedin, January 11. At the Police Court a man employed by a hardware firm was fined JUs for selling an air-gun to a boy under 16 years. Air. AViddowson, S.AL, said it was most dangerous and reprehensible practice to sell such a weapon ■to a boy of tender years.
