MAORIS IN PARLIAMENT. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 9. A large native meeting has been called for January 28th, at Waahi (Mahuta’s settlement), to consider the position of Dr. Pomare, member for Western Maori electorate, it being alleged that he is not eligible to sit as a Maori representative, owing to being a three-quarter cast. There is groat opposition. Mr. Massey and many of his supporters from all parts of the North Island will he present. LOSS OF GOOD OFFICERS. Timaru, January 9. Mr. J. Brown agricultural instructor to the South Canterbury Education Board resigned to-day having accpsted a position with a larger renumer.irion under the South Australian Department of Agriculture. Mr. J. G. G ow, shief inspector, who recently concluded 25 years’ service under the South Canterbury Education Board, intimated to-day Ids intention to retire at an early date. ABUNDANCE OF TEACHERS. Timaru, January 9. The shortage of teachers, which a few years ago was much felt in this district, appears to have been remedied. The board to-day received 77 applications for ten appointments, the number in each ease ranging from four to fifteen. There wore fourteen applications for the position of secondary assistant at the District .High Sehooi.
