THE TERRITORIALS.
Sergeant-Major Dunham and Q.M.S. Collins attended a parade at Waitara yesterday. Opportunity was taken to measure about forty men for uniforms. The parade was a good one, and the instructors express themselves as perfectly satisfied with the physique, keenness, and intelligence of the men. Special reference should bo made to the enterprise of a team of the mounted men of the 2nd Regiment. This team was in evidence at the Stratford A. and P. Show, but there was little or no competition for them to display' what they could do. At the mil.tary tournament at Palmerston North, held at the New Year, they were in good company, there being nine teams competing in the Lloyd Lindsay Competition, including a crack team belonging to the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. The Waitara men had bad luck in having a horse incapacitated the day previous to the tournament, one of the men being.consequently unable to compete. Notwithstanding this, they finished second to the Canterbury team, only two points behind. The personnel of the team was: Lieut. .Toll, S. M. Jennings, Q.M.S. Hawkins, Scrgt. Lonergan. In addition the team scored one first (Lieut. Joll securing first place in the lime-cutting), and four seconds. Much credit is due to Sergeant-Major Dunham, the team’s instructor. Next .year it is to he hoped that the local men will take a share in this tournament. Ample opportunity' for practice'and training will be given, since military sports will be held ax every camp.
