WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE.
FORBES ROBERTSON ASKED FOR ADVICE. A CAUTIOUS REPLY. (Received 8, 8.5 a.m.) New York, January 7. San Francisco women voters who desire to make the best use of the new-ly-granted franchise nave asked Mr. Forbes Robertson’s advice. The actor has not attempted to outline a definite programme, but contented himself with emphasising how the singe had aided women’s emancipation by discussion of present-day conventions. SWEDISH WOMEN. Women seem to have played a considerable part in the recent elections in Sweden. They have not got the vote, like the .women of Norway, hut they have been carrying on an active campaign for the suffrage for several years, and they seem at last to have made an impression on the governing powers, for the Conservatives, against whom they throw all their energies, have been beaten. To assist their allies, the Liberals and Social Democrats, the suffragettes established a committee in every constituency, and hold 217 meetings during the election. One of their leaders made thirty-five speeches, but their campaign was not marked by any outbreaks of violence against their opponents or the Government. The Swedish suffragettes seem to have campaigned on the lines of peaceful persuasion from the first. And perhaps that is why the mere man in Sweden seems to have listened to them.
