Napier, January 4. The position at the close of to-day’s play was as follows :
The position is extremely interesting on the assumption that Hicks at the most will secure a draw with Miles, the latter being the exchange of a pawn to the good. Then if Gyles beats Grierson lie plays off with Mason for the championship. If Grierson beats Gyles, lie wins the championship, and if Grierson draws with Gyles the former plays off with Mason for the championship.
