THE TERRITORIALS.

THE VALUE OF -GOOD RIFLE SHOOTING. STATE HELP URGED. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 2. In the course of a speech in presenting the prizes won at tho Rifle Association’s meeting this morning, the Mayor of Auckland (Mr C. J. Parr) said that, after all, the safety if New Zealand from foreign attack bung upon a rather slender thread, i-ucii was the disturbed state of Europe that any day there might be i big war, into which England might be dragged. Such was the regretable state of feeling between England and another great Empire that any day war might happen, and in such a deplorable event no one could , tell what the complications might he. The Rifle Associations and rifle clubs ought to receive tho support of the whole community. (Applause.) At present they relied to a great extent upon private assistance, and lie appealed to tho citizens to increase this assistance. Furthermore, tho Mayor expressed the opinion that it was high time the State recognised and encouraged rifle associations more than was the case at present. In time of war i good shot would be worth fifty had ones. (Cheers.)
