(From Our Own Correspondent.) 1911 is now a back date. In this town the year passed to the accompaniment of a few mild explosions, set off possibly by some enthusiast to whom New Year’s Eve brought memories of “Scotch nichts” gone by. Whanga is practically empty. Most of the railway men .and local residents are away on holiday, and there is a marked absence of “life and hustle” among the few of us who have stayed here. The want ,of a resident medical man here was keenly felt on Saturday, a Indy at Kohnratahi was taken suddenly and seriously ill. The nearest doctor lived at Stratford, 45 miles iway. He was hastily summoned, and by means of a motor-car and two ielivs of horses, he covered the distance in about TV hours, a very creditable performance when the state of the road is taken into consideration.
