DECEASED PERSONS’ ESTATES. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, December 29. The estates of 115 deceased persons were assessed for stamp duty during December, the largest being that of Mary C. Ireland, Auckland, £69,251. Taranaki estates: John Vickery £1991, Alexander Gow £636.

The .year just closing has been one of marked activity in the building trade locally. Permits have been issued representing a total value of £91,474, against £61,923 in the previous year.
ARRESTED FOR THEFT. Blenheim, December 30
Four men—Jaiyes Brimer, William Stephenson, John Wilson, and James Heydon—the three latter of the crew of, the steamer Blenheim, were arrested last night for burglary at Clouston’s bond. There will probab1 V bo other arrests. The bulk of the stolen goods has not been recovered.
FATAL FUN. Christchurch December 29
Some youths were skylarking in an hotel at Leithfield this afternoon and one named Shaw was punched in the neck. The neck shortly after started to swell, and a doctor was procured who said that a blond vessel was broker. He hastened oil for another doctor to perform an operation but before they could return Shaw was dead.
SUPPOSED SUICIDE. Dunedin, December 29
A single man named George ChanHer, employed by Robert Bell farmer it Waibola, disappeared on Wednesday night, and to-day bis dead body was found banging to a tree in a bush on the farm. Deceased told his lister a few days previously that be intended to do away with himself, but gave no reason.

An old man named Richard "Walters, who died suddenly at Point Cbevdicr a few days ago, was reputed to be an old army officer. It is stated r hat he had proved bis title as the Vir to an estate in Chancery worth 23,000,090, being the only surviving member of a well known Exeter c amilv, A witness at the inquest stated that the old man refused to proceed with his claim, declaring that it his age, 74 years, the reward would not be commensurate with the worry. SEAMAN DROWNED. Auckland, December 29. A trimmer named William Brown from the steamer Opawa, was drowned in the harbour late ■ last night. Deceased was going aboard the ship, ind fell from the gangway into the water. All efforts to save him failed. Brown was 27 years of age, a native if Scotland.
