“A WHITE HOPE.”
ARRIVAL OF JIM BARRY
dim Barry, the well-known American heavyweight boxer, accompanied by bis brother “Alike” Barry, was a through passenger to Sydney by tho Marama. Barry, who is a modest, unassuming young follow, scales 2001 b, and is 25 years of ago, is under contract to Mr Mclntosh, and lias signed for live lights, his prospective opponents being Sam McYea, Bill Lang, Jack Lester, “Porkey” AlcFlynn, and Sam Langford the Boston “Tar Baby,” Langford’s being the last of the contests arranged.
The boxer, who reported himself to an Auckland pressman to be in splendid condition, has been working hard in the stoke-hole on the voyage across, and expects to be ready to enter the ring throe weeks after Ids arrival in Sydney. Ho is one of the few “white hopes” at present in sight with anything like a record, and although only practically a youngster, has x fought no less than 159 lights, and of these has got the verdict in all but seven. Langford lie lias met on no less than in vie occasions, and was only beaten once, when the “Tar Baby” knocked him out in sixteen rounds at Los Angelos, while he got two newspaper decisions against the coloured freak.
Two years ago he met Sam MeVea in Paris, and after the light had gone fifteen rounds ho knocked his opponent out, but was disqualified for hitting as they broke away. Ho is confident of bis ability to boat all the boxers mentioned except Langford, and modestly explains that be expects ‘to give bis old opponent the fight of ids life. Afjter ids contract in Sydney is finished, Barry will return to Auckland, and if sufficient inducement offers will meet anyone his weight.
