AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
A BIG AND SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. THE FIRST DAY. (ho axemen have always had good luck with the weather, and though rain threatened to spoil the success of the first day of the carnival at Eltham, a burning sun soon allayed the fears of the officials, and brought out large crowds of gaily-dressed people. All the morning trains to Eltham were crowded, and though the gate takings were about £lO less than for the corresponding day last year, £l/50 is a ■ >:g amount to take and represents a large gathering. Interest in the chopping was never so keen, there being besides the burly C. O’Rourke, the southern champion, all the big men for many a mile around.
