News has been received from Aifcuaka (Cook Islands) of -several exedt-

ag boating accidents there -at the be-

ginning of the month. A fishing party was returning to the shore, when the boat missed its passage, and was thrown on the reef and smashed to pieces. Of. the crew of seven, six were carried out to sea, being picked up by canoes. The other man was sucked under the reef, but eventually reached the shore much exhausted. Another boat struck ; a patch of coral, and the crew remained up to their waists in, water for eight hours until rescued. r Point Erin Park, recently acquired by the City Council frqjn the Campbell trustees, was publicly opened by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr Parr) yesterday. There was a large attendance of the public and visiting officials, who are in Auckland in connection with the opening of the Town Hall. The park has access to a fine sea beach. A contract has been let for sea baths adjacent. _ The conference between representatives of tire Tramway Company and the employees in connection, with the threatened strike for improved conditions arranged for this evening, has been deferred till Wednesday, when a representative of the Now Zealand

Federation of Labour will he present. Mr. Legetimer, chairman of the company, wires from Adelaide that he will arrive in Auckland on December 21th, and is prepared to deal with the matter immediately on arrival, and the decision will bo retrospective. As regards the action of the union >n threatening to strike on December 22nd, it was hardly fair tactics. Still, he honed the union would not bo so unreasonable in view of the fact

that the company was honestly desirous of meeting them fairly, and the local manager had already offered to meet their demands to a very large extent.
