Mr. Lloyd-George amended clause 18 by reducing the membership from ten thousand to five thousand for approved societies, also providing for tiie grouping of societies with memberships under live thousand. Labour members failed to secure the abolition of the medical test for membership, Mr. Masterman pointing out that the Government makes provision for persons rejected by societies. EMPIRE TRADE COMMISSION. London, October 27. Replying to questions, Mr. Asquith hoped the Empire Trade Commission would shortly be appointed. UNIONISTS AND PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. • k: London, October 27. Dir Steelman, chairman of the Conservative Organisation, announced that the leaders of the Unionist Party would accept their Parliamentary salaries without prejudice to their opposition to the annual vote for payment of members.
