The Commonwealth Government propose to establish a naval college at fVrt Hacking at a cost of £106,000, whereof £35,000 is promised from tthe Diea.lnugin Fund. It is expected to bo complete within a year.

GREAT STORM AT BROKEN HILL

Sydney, October 16. A phenomenal rainstorm occurred at Broken Hill, and a number of residents were flooded out. Considerable damage was done. I here was the biggest rise in the dams for thirty years.

The Philatelic Congress has appointed a permanent sub-committee to encourage juvenile stamp collectors to take an interest in the science of philately. Mr Staples, the New Zealand delegate, declared that when intelligently ioilowed, it gave a wider outiooa to poiilical and social changes. Flo suggested illustrated stamps as a means of advertising the country.

(Received 17, 9.40 a.m.) Sydney, October 17. Messrs. Carr and Hollis, Federal and State Labour members at Bathurst, have practically declared against preference to unionists. Mr. Carr said the Government could not compel it even by Act of Parliament. Mr. Hollis says no union had the right to seek preference unless the members constituted a majority of those employed.

The trial of Peacock has commenced. Accused challenged twenty jurors without explanation. The Crown challenged eighteen. The evidence, which is similar to that taken in the Police Court, is not yet concluded.
