Christchurch, October 4

Flags on the Now Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Rotorua and on the company’s office at Lyttelton wore flying half-mast to-day in consequence of tho death of Mr Davis Sturrock, second steward of tlio steamer. Deceased had been ill for some days past,.and had been attend■«s VI the ship’s surgeon,' who on going fo”Sturrock’s room shortly after midnight to see how he was progressing, found him dead in his bed. An inquest was hold this morning by Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., district coroner, who, after hearing the evidence of Dr. Edsall, returned a verdict that death was duo to heart failure. Sturrock, who had been in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company for some time, was a married man, bs wife living in England. Dunedin, October 4.

A child named Elizabeth Williamson, aged three and a half years, daughter of John 'Williamson, farmer, North Taieri, died after undergoing an operation to-day. The operation, which was performed by Dr. Allan for pest nasal growth, had been completed, when the child collapsed and died.

Wellington, October 4

Shortly before noon to-day the fully dressed body of a man between thirtylive and forty years of ago was found floating in the harbour near Queen’S wharf. It appeared to have been in the watetr for eight or nine days. The sum of £lO 12s 2£d was found in the pockets, besides a left-luggage ticket in the name of J. Marshall, also an order for £-10 from the Royal Bank of Scotland, Aberdeen, made on the Bank of New South Wales, Mastsrton. Enquiries showed that a draft for £4O is lying there for Jas. McGlashan, and has never been inquired for . It is considered that the body is that of McGlashan, and that be recently arrived in New Zealand from Aberdeen. An inquest will be held to-morrow.

The body of a fully-developed male child, apparently two or three days old, was found in a section in Brougham Street on Tuesday evening.
