RISE IN PRICE OF SUGAR. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, September 1. The Colonial Sugar Refining Co. lias notified a further advance of £1 per ton in the price of all grades of sugar. This means a rise of sixpence on the 561 b bag, and retailors will no doubt have to raise the price on parcels of 121bs and upwards. The present advance is the third in' less than two months, sugar being now £3 per ton dearer than it was last July. The market for sugar in Australasia is ruled by the European sugar-beet crop. ROBBERY ON A SCHOONER. Greymouth, September 1. A daring robbery was committed between eleven o’clock last night and early this morning on board the schooner Annie Hill, lying alongside the wharf. The captain, first and second mates and the cook retired at eleven last night, and nothing was known of the occurrence till eight o’clock tin’s morning. The captain is said to have lost £2l, and the others smaller amounts. ■.’The polices have suspicion of a person, who boarded the vessel last night asking for a meal, but loft for Rocfton by the early train this morning. WATERSIDE WORKERS. Auckland, September 1. At the meeting of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation, a proposal by Mr Boardman (Auckland) to ask the Arbitration Court for double pay for all overtime for the whole Waterside Workers’ Federation, and failing such award to take a plebiscite for the cancellation of registration, was lost by 11 to 8. A resolution was passed that.it bo an instruction from the conference to each branch to decline to handle lime and cement unless in dust-proof bags after January 1 next, and that unless all holds are fumigated at least one in two months they should refuse to work therein. WHARF PILFERING CASES. Auckland, September 1. Ehrman, Hadden and Glover, found guilty on different charges in connection with the wharf-pillaging cases, were called for sentence this morning, hut on the application of counsel were allowed to stand over until to-morrow. Mr Tole asked, would not sentence l)e deferred until after tthe conclusion of the case against Mclntyre, as cases had occurred where sentences imposed had some bearing on the jury? ; His Honour did not think it necessary that this should ho done, but said this matter could be considered to-morrow. SALE OF SEEDS. Dunedin, September 1. A meeting of Dunedin seed merchants was held at the Chamber of Commerce to-day to discuss the Sale of Seeds Control Bill. It was decided to act in conjunction with the seed merchants in Invercargill, Christchurch, and the North Island, and to send delegates to give evidence before tlio Agricultural Committee of the House. Messrs W. E. Reynolds and B. Waters wore appointed delegates to proceed to Wellington on Tuesday. RED FUNNEL FLEET. Dunedin, September 1. Advice has been received that the Union Steamship Company has just let a contract for a new cargo steamer. The vessel will he built by Osborne, C.'raham and Co., of Sunderland, and her dimensions will be:—Length, 298 ft; breadth, 45ft. The dead weight will be about 3750 tons. She is to bo delivered in the Dominion at the end of April, and will bo specially fitted for tlic New Zealand and Australian cargo trade. Tin’s vessel will bring t!u\ strength of the company’s fleet up to 09, exclusive of tugs, launches and tenders. It is understood that the building programme is not vet comnlotrd.
