LIFEBOAT WASHED ASHORE
Sydney, August 29. A ship’s lifeboat has been washed up on the beach at Gromdla. 'The beat was empty, and the name obliterated, but the port of registration, Callao, is decipherable. Three vessels, the Amazon, Inca and Laura, are overdue from Callao. Sydney, August 30. The boat washed up bears the name “Laura.” It has been in the water some time, and fears arc expressed that the vessel was lost during the July gales. All hands on the Laura were Peruvian. The vessel was en route to Newcastle to load coal, and was 134 days out. She was under the command of Captain Lecouna. the coal vend case. Sydney, August 29. Canon Long, headmaster of the Grammar School at Kew, Victoria, has been elected Bishop of Bathurst. The Government Statistician estimates the area under wheat in New South Wales at 2,798,930 acres, an increase .pf' 180,000 acres compared with last year. The area under grain shows an increase of a quarter of a million acres, and that-under hay a decrease of ever 12,000 acres. ALLEGED GRAFT CHARGES. Sydney, August 30. The committee appointed by the City Council found that there was no ground for the alleged graft charges, wherein an alderman was said to he involved. CADETS’ GOOD WORK. Sydney, -August 30. A five in the Federal Military College was prevented from doing serious damage owing to the splendid discipline and good work of the cadets. ATHLETICS. Sydney, August 30. A race has been arranged for 130 yards world’s sprint championship between Holway and Donaldson on September 23rd. FEDERAL PARLIAMENT. Melbourne, August 30. The Federal Parliament meets on Tuesday. Amongst the Bills promised are the Arbitration Act Amendment and Tariff Revision.
