NEW CALEDONIAN TRAGEDY. (Received 10, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, August 10. Farther particulars of tho New Caledonian tragedy, cal tied - on Saturday, show that besides the De Voux family an employee named Maisse was also murdered. The bodies wore cut to pieces, probably with a military sword It is supposed they were attacked with gun and rifle while at a meal A Frenchman has been arrested. v
A Mi KAC O LOUS ESCAPE. ES THE MAN A WAT V GOUGE. (Per Press Association.'; Woodville, August 10. There, was a miraculous escape from serious accident in the Manawatu Gorge at midday yesterday. Two motor cars ran into each other at the place in the middle o'' the Gorge called Harney’s Point. One car belonged to Mr S. Bolton and the other to Mr Osborne Tilly, of Pahiatua. The former was returning from Palmerston, and was being driven by FePx Bolton, and in tire car were his mother and two sisters. The orher car contained Mi and Mrs Tilly, bliss Allen, and a lady from Christchurch. The cars mot. at a sharp .-orner in tho road, where there was no i han.ee of passing, and to avoid going over the side into the river they had to bump into each other. Mrs Bolton and daughters were thrown out of the car over tho side of the hank, the iormer rolling down some distance btfore she caught hold of a hush. Ju the ether car the lady from Christchurch got her nose injured. Strange +> relate that was tho only damage sustained by tbe party. Both cars \. ore badly injured, and it took till nearly midnight to effect repairs.
