MILITARY TRAINING.

• RIOT AT THE HITT. "Wellington, August 4. The examination of young men registered for military training was completed at the Hntt last night under difficulties. A procession of about 300 young fellows formed up at Petone, marched to the drill hall at the Butt singing, .shouting, beating tin cans, blowing whistles and bugles, etc. The leaders of the crowd '.were, dressed as clowns and comedians, and carried a banner with a skull and cross-bones on it. A stone was hurled through the skylight of the hall, and the police arrested the man who threw it. Later on nearly every pane of glass in the building was similarly broken. The doors of the hall were clos' d when the authorities recognised that the mob meant mischief, and the young fellows called upon to submit to medical examination were admitted one by one. An attempt was made to storm the hall, but the police and Permanent Artillerymen were able to i rustrate this move. The police were jostled and some eggs wore thrown at them. A large number of youths declined to enter the hall to be examined, fearing they would be roughly handled by the mob; The Defence Department will probably take proceedings against the ringleaders of the demonstration.
