The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 1911. JUSTICE TO THE DEAD.
Under the above heading the ‘‘Auckland Star” remarks: “It is a thousuid pities that the statement whicii the loader of the Opposition made in the House of Representatives was nut made weeks ago. The imputation which Mr Massey cast upon Mr T. E. Taylor, in a lit of anger as lie now admits, troubled the man who was principally concerned a great dn d loss than it did his friends, simply bocaiiM his conscience was perfectly clour oi offence, but it introduced a deplorable amount of bitterness into party politics which threatened to demonstrate itself in many unpleasant ways during the approaching general election. Until he had retracted his hasty words, as ho did fully and unreservedly last night, Air Massey could not expect to lie allowed to speak in Christchurch, and probably his supporters on the platform would have suffered as severely as he would have suffered himself for his unfortunate indiscretion. But his frank withdrawal of the imputation and his expression of regret that it was ever made should close the incident, and we trust that its discussion, except as a lesson to politicians to keep a close watch upon their tongues in the heat ol debate, will never he revived. it is only fair to Mr Massey to say before dismissing the subject that ho had received seme provocation and that he spoke at a t.rne when party feeling was running very high. As for Air Taylor, he is now beyond »hc petty controversies of public life, but his friends, and par t’cnlarly tlio c who knw the chivalrous manner in which he conducted himself throughout the unhappy business Mr Massey had in his mind w;t! ho glad that his political hiteg.'+y a: well as his private worth remains linin’peached.
