RAINS IN CANTERBURY.
(For Press Association.) Wellington, July 2u. Gin i.stehui ub papers state that consequent on the lain and unusually high tides the river Avon overiiowed its banks as far as Bnrwood. Giber livers are Hooded, and at Garfield watei was flowing into tiro township. Between Waddington and Spi ingficld telegraph poles are down, and it is feared that the wires further inland are very seriously damaged. Several trains Were delayed for a considerable time thi ougii washouts and slips. Twelve, inches of rain have fallen on Banks Peninsular since Saturday night. At Oxford a foot of snow lias fallen on the lower lands and there ■was a heavier fall at higher altitudes.
